The recently placed plaque for Police Constable Matthew Connelly is set at a slight angle with a rounded marble rock behind it with holes to hold flowers. It is in a landscaped garden, next to the much more obvious sandstone obelisk for Constable James Sangster (who died in February 1893). The text of this memorial plaque is:
In Memory of
Police Constable Matthew
Connelly
Who gave his life
in the execution of his duty
at Sandy Creek near Laidley
on the 29th August 1861.
Sadly interred in unmarked grave at Ipswich
on the 2nd September 1861. Constable Connelly was
Aged 44 years.
Died a hero long ago but not forgotten.
