"RCMP Cemetery at 'Depot' Division
Regina, SK
North West Mounted Police Headquarters was moved to Regina in 1885 at which time space was allocated on the north side of 'Depot' Division for a Cemetery. Over the years, hundreds of deceased members and family members have been buried in the Cemetery. Surprisingly and sadly, there are many unmarked graves in the Cemetery and the identity of the unknown may never be accurately known.
The new (2012) main entrance to the Cemetery was well conceived architecturally -- it consists of two pillars mounted on either side and these are connected by a prominant arch on which the various crests of the Force are space mounted and depicted. Four smaller cement pillars stand on either side as one draws through the main entrance. Embedded in the pillars are black granite plates on which are etched the names of the members of the Honour Roll. The Cemetery is expertly and respectfully cared for by 'Depot' Maintenance Staff -- they deserve every note of appreciation for their dedication.
Historical custom holds that a Memorial Service is held for the deceased member in the Chapel. After Chapel, the funeral cortege marches slowly around the Parade Square for the final time. The procession then takes a northerly route past the Stables and the Applied Science Building to the left and onwards to the 'Depot' Cemetery. Here, the procession meets an RCMP sentry standing at attention at the Main Entrance.
At graveside, no matter the rank no matter the person -- a final salute is given."
