In 1937 the City of Mesa constructed a new city hall with the involvement of the WPA. The building was designed to house the city offices, courts, police department and the fire department. At the time the city had a population of 5000 and was a growing agricultural hub. Having outgrown the space, the city moved its offices into other facilities and converted the space to a museum of natural history. The museum expanded in the 1980's to fill the building.
