"With the emergence of airborne troops in 1941 came the need for an airborne howitzer. The M3 was created by shortening an existing 105mm howitzer barrel and mounting it on a modified 75mm carriage. The lightweight M3 proved to be an effective weapon within its limited range of 8295 yards."
