The sign says, "This part of Southern California is crossed by many active faults. You can see a section of the famous San Andreas Fault System from here, directly across the valley. Look for telltale fault features such as long, straight rows of hills, and dark lines of vegetation where ground water has been trapped within the shifting rock.

The ground you're standing on is slowly moving towards Northern California along this great fault zone. During the past few years, the earth movements hav been tearing Baja California away from Mexico's mainland. These same forces have helped from the valley below, called the Salton Trough."
