The Royal Exchange Hotel is a two storey, limestone building with an unusual first floor balcony built in 1874. What is reputed to be the longest wrought iron verandah in South Australia stretches along both the Digby Street and the Graves Street frontages.
Originally the Exchange Hotel, when built in the 1860s on the other side of the road, the establishment attained the prefix Royal after a visit by the Duke of Clarence (grandson of Queen Victoria and second in line to the throne) in 1880.
