Op het toegangshek van de Begraafplaats Brauwstraat te Woerden zijn twee gevleugelde zandlopers zichtbaar. Een gevleugelde zandloper staat volgens mij symbool voor het vergaan van de tijd.

Het is best een merkwaardig gezicht: een begraafplaats van 1480 m² midden in een woonwijk. In Woerden vinden we zo’n begraafplaats in het Schilderskwartier aan De Brauwstraat. Maar hoe komt die nou in de bebouwde kom terecht?

Voor dit mysterie gaan we helemaal terug naar 1813. In dat jaar overleed op 29 juli Dionisius Groeneveld en op diezelfde dag nog werd hij begraven. Aan het einde van de achttiende eeuw was er weerstand tegen het begraven in kerken, wat toen gebruikelijk was. De voorouders van Dionisius en vele andere Woerdenaren werden in de Petruskerk begraven. Maar om de een of andere reden wilde Dionisius dat niet.

Dinosius wilde niet op het kerkhof bij de Petruskerk begraven worden. Hij stichtte in de Pannebakkerijen op de oude polders Oudeland en Tournoysveld in 1813 een eigen begraafplaats. Oké, dus de begraafplaats was er eerder dan de huizen die er nu staan. De huizen aan de Tournoysstraat en De Brauwstraat werden namelijk in de jaren 30 en 50 van de twintigste eeuw gebouwd. Dat is waarom-ie nu midden in de woonwijk ligt.

150 jaar lang zijn familieleden en nazaten van Dionisius Groeneveld begraven op de begraafplaats aan De Brauwstraat. Dit gebeurde tot 1963. Tot die tijd waren er 68 begravingen (zover bekend). De begraafplaats is overigens niet openbaar toegankelijk, eigendom van de gemeente en sinds 1989 monumentaal. Naast familie en nazaten van Dionisius, zijn ook dokter Isaac de Brauw en predikant en Vlaams activist Jan Derk Domela Nieuwenhuis Nyegaard hier begraven.

It is quite a curious sight: a cemetery of 1480 m² in the middle of a residential area. In Woerden we find such a cemetery in the Schilderskwartier on De Brauwstraat. But how does it end up in built-up areas?

For this mystery we go all the way back to 1813. In that year Dionisius Groeneveld died on July 29th and he was buried on the same day. At the end of the eighteenth century, there was resistance to burial in churches, which was common at the time. The ancestors of Dionisius and many other inhabitants of Woerden were buried in the Petruskerk. But for some reason Dionisius didn't want to.

Dinosius did not want to be buried in the cemetery at the Petruskerk. In 1813 he founded his own cemetery in the Pannebakkerijen on the old polders of Oudeland and Tournoysveld. Okay, so the cemetery was there before the houses that are there now. The houses on Tournoysstraat and De Brauwstraat were built in the 1930s and 1950s. That's why it's now in the middle of the residential area.

For 150 years family members and descendants of Dionisius Groeneveld were buried in the cemetery on De Brauwstraat. This happened until 1963. Until then there were 68 burials (so far as known). The cemetery is not publicly accessible, it is owned by the municipality and has been a monument since 1989. In addition to family and descendants of Dionisius, doctor Isaac de Brauw and pastor and Flemish activist Jan Derk Domela Nieuwenhuis Nyegaard are also buried here.
