The Amherst Historical Society was founded in 1899. In 1903 the Strong House became the permanent home of the Society. Their mission "is to connect people to the town of Amherst, its history, and its culture." In 1916 the Amherst History Museum, which is is governed by the Amherst Historical Society, open in the building. The Amherst Historical Society offers a lunchtime lecture series on every two weeks on Friday at 12:15 pm.

The Strong House was built by Nehemiah Strong in 1744 in the third precinct of Hadley which is now the town of Amherst. It is the oldest surviving house in Amherst. Nehemial Strong and generations of his descendants lived here and became prominent members of the Amherst community.

The house looks much the same today as it did in the 19th century despite periods of alterations made from the 1760s through the 1850's. It retains many elements of 18th century architecture common in the Connecticut River Valley and particularly the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts. The house was constructed in the Georgian style. It has a symmetrical facade with a doorway in the center, which features a small portico and flanked by two Doric columns. The building has a gambrel roof with dormers and a central chimney. There are two stories below the roof with five bays, with two bays on each side of the center bay. The front has four 3 by 4 multi-pane windows on each side and a similar window above the entrance.
