"The renaissance revival style McLean block was constructed in 1904 after the devastating Chinatown fire of 1900. In its earliest years, the building contained the shops of Chinese merchants and tailors businesses were located on the ground floor, residences on the second floor. Two single story cookhouses were once located at the rear of the property. Later businesses included a garment factory, garment cleaner, an embroidery shop, a florist, Korean and Filipino restaurants and a bar. The original owner was James L McLean, the president of the pioneer building and loan company and vice president of the inter island steam navigation company. "
