The congregation of the South Congregational Church was established in 1842. The brownstone church was designed by George F. Meachem and built in the Gothic Revival style in 1865. In 1974, South Congregational Church merged with the First Baptist Church to become South Church.
The main block of the South Church has a gable roof and a double door entrance framed by a Gothic arch. Above the entrance is a large Gothic style stained glass window.A the apes of the roof is a small Gothic window. The roof is topped by a cross.
On the northwest corner is a tall five stage tower and steeple. The base of the tower has a Gothic style entrance. The second level has two Gothic windows, The third level has a single Gothic window with triangular projections at each corner. The fourth level is a belfry with a pair of Gothic louvered windows. Above is an octagonal steeple with a flared base. Clocks are embedded in modified pentagonal projections on alternating sides of the base. Triangular openings are high up on the alternating sides without clocks.
Clerestory windows are located below the roof line on the east side. A slanted roof cover a projecting section that has gable at the front with a Gothic entrance. Then followed by six tall Gothic windows separated by brick columns. At the southeast corner is an octagonal tower. An addition with a lower gable roof is attached to the back of the church.
