In the 1920s, the Frisco Railway ordered 30 of these 4-8-2 locomotives from the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia. Fifteen were delivered in 1923, five more in 1925 and the last ten in 1926. As passenger trains were growing longer and heavier, U.S. railroads were finding that these ‘Mountain’ type locomotives were just the solution to their motive power needs. The Frisco intended to use these 4-8-2s for their two long-distance passenger routes: St. Louis to Oklahoma City and Kansas City to Birmingham, Alabama. But they, as did other railroads, found them to be equally as effective in high-speed freight service.

Many of these locomotives lasted till the end of the steam era. Six of Frisco’s Baldwin-built 4-8-2s have been preserved, including this one in Langan Park on the outskirts of Mobile, Alabama. The engine appears to be in pretty good shape, but I don’t believe it sported those red wheels in actual operation.
