"The official inauguration of the Saint Pierre cemetery was carried out on December 30, 1863, by the prefect Maupas and the mayor of Marseille François-Xavier Balthazar Rouvière.

Previously, in addition to the small parish, conventual or hospital cemeteries, the city buried its deceased in the large cemetery of Saint-Charles. Too quickly saturated and too close to the city center, it was decided to build a new, larger and more remote cemetery, the Saint-Pierre cemetery. This place of contemplation is one of the richest in the city in terms of architecture and heritage and one of the largest cemeteries in France with 63 ha.

It houses many remarkable tombs: monumental tombs, statues, sculpted decorations, caryatids, angels, mourners and curiosities of all kinds.

Among the monuments, the tomb of the Lains family is by far the most famous in the cemetery. Work of the sculptor Buselli, it represents the disappeared on her deathbed embraced by her husband and a statue representing the soul welcomed in paradise, of the sculptor Henri Reybaud. You can also discover many works by sculptors André Allar, Auguste Carli, Louis Bottinelly, and Antoine Sartorio or architect like Pascal Xavier Coste.

In the Saint-Pierre cemetery rest some celebrities such as the painters Adolphe Monticelli and Alphonse Moutte, the poet Emile Sicard, the poet actor Antonin Artaud, the poet writer Edmond Rostand, the composer and performer Vincent Scotto and his son-in-law Allibert ... or even the parents of Fernandel or the brother of Edouard Balladur. Marcel Pagnol, rests in the small cemetery of La Treille, an island of greenery in the heart of the city.

The cemetery also houses the "Cathedral of Silence", an eight-storey concrete building allowing the burial of nearly 190,000 people, a crematorium built by the architect Léonce Muller taking inspiration from the mosques that were recently enlarged, in a more current architecture, considering the increase in the number of cremations, and an art deco style crypt according to the plans of the architect Gaston Castel dedicated to the Marseilles soldiers who died on the field of honor during the war of 1914-1918."

L'on peut également découvrir de très nombreuses oeuvres des sculpteurs André Allar, Auguste Carli, Louis Bottinelly, et Antoine Sartorio ou d'architecte comme Pascal Xavier Coste.

Le cimetière abrite également la "Cathédrale du Silence", édifice de huit étages en béton permettant l'inhumation de près de 190 000 personnes, un crématorium construit par l’architecte Léonce Muller en s’inspirant des mosquées ayant été agrandi récemment, dans une architecture plus actuelle, considérant l'augmentation du nombre des crémations, et une crypte style art déco suivant les plans de l'architecte Gaston Castel consacrée aux soldats marseillais morts sur le champ d’honneur pendant la guerre de 1914-1918."
