In Diocese of Springfield merged St. Mary of the Assumption Church with St. John the Baptist Church to form St. Elizabeth Parish in 2010. They then closed St. Mary of the Assumption Church and, in 2019, sold the building to Church of the Nazarene for $750,000. The statue of St. Mary of the Assumption from St. Mary of the Assumption Church was retained and is now on display at St. John the Baptist Church.
A 5' high bronze statue depicts St. Mary, the mother of Jesus, at her Assumption into heaven. Mary is wearing flowing robes and gesturing with her right hand while her left hand is down towards her waist. Her head is tilted slightly to the right. At are feet are three cherubs.
The the statue is set on an irregular octagonal granite base which is inscribed:
ST. MARY
OF THE
ASSUMPTION
According to Christian theology, Mary was a young Jewish woman from Nazareth, Judea, now a town in Palestine. She was married to Joseph. Mary was chosen by God to conceive a child by the divine intersection of the Holy Spirit. Upon birth, the male infant was named Jesus.
According to Catholic doctrine Mary was a virgin who was miraculously conceived without original sin - the Immaculate Conception. She did not die; but at the end of her life on earth was taken directly into heaven - the Assumption of Mary.
