The ghost sign reads "FURNITURE Montgomery Ward" and is still on the red bricks above the awnings covering the storefronts of of 112 and 114 S. Pecan Street, Nacogdoches, TX. It is next to the popular restaurant Dolli's Diner" at the corner of of S. Pecan St. and E. Pilar St. Across the street is the Charles Bright Visitor Center. The ghost sign's text is best viewed from across the street or some distance away where the metal awning no longer prevents seeing the text on the bricks above the awning.

Montgomery Ward began in 1872 in Chicago as a mail order general store. As it grew, it became one of most successful retail store businesses. After WW2, various executive level turnover occurred which hindered its growth and lost public confidence. By the late 1990s Wards began to loose its market share to other competitors like Target and Walmart. In 2000, Wards announced it was going out of the retail store business and by 2001 it had closed all its store outlets.

However, the legacy of Montgomery Ward transitioned to an online retail service and is still operating as an online only business. In a way, it has returned to its original form as a mail order company.
