In December of 1835 Brevet Major Francis L. Dade and 107 men were marching from Fort Brooke on Tampa Bay to Fort King located near present day Ocala. They were going to Fort King to reinforce the troops stationed there due to recent uprisings from native Seminole warriors in the area. On December 28th they were attacked by the Seminole's and Dade and all his troops were massacred with the exception of three survivors.
This cannon is a replica of the one that Dade's detachment had with them on that fatal day. It is a six-pounder cannon. It is kept in the 'Cannon Pavilion', an enclosed and locked area of the park not far from the site of the massacre. It can be viewed during normal park hours of 8:00 am to sunset daily, 365 days a year. A $3.00 per car entrance fee is required.
