This marker outside of the Knife River home of the Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara Nation recognizes Hans "Young Bird" Walker Sr., whose daughters purchased this land so that it could be preserved forever.
The marker reads as follows:
"Hans "Young Bird" Walker Sr.
1889 - 1963
Welcome to the Knife River home of the Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara Nation. The original site of three Hidatsa villages who lived here until 1837, when a smallpox epidemic forced them to flee upriver. Hans' parents, Joseph and Susan Young bird were descendants of the surviving Hidatsa along the Knife River. They lived along the east bank of the Missouri in the lucky mound community on the Fort Berthold Reservation. Later Hans established a Catalan horse ranch in the Independence area. This historic property was purchased and donated by his daughters. It is dedicated to the memory of their father, the low Clan and the descendants of the Hidatsa tribe who once lived and prospered here.
