It is the third bridge built in the city (after the Puentecillas and the Puente Mayor) and was designed to give better access to Dos Aguas Island and the orchards that traditionally existed on it.1

There was already a wooden bridge in the same location, built in 1874, but it deteriorated rapidly and by 1882 the Palencia City Council had to close it. From that moment on, the efforts to build a new iron bridge began, which definitively crystallized in 1909 thanks to the mediation of the Palencia deputy Abilio Calderón, who at that time held the position of general director of public works in the government of Spain. The Palencia City Council approved through a motion held on Palencia Day to officially name the new bridge as the Abilio Calderón bridge as a token of recognition, a bridge that was inaugurated for use in March 1911.2

The project was carried out by the engineers Luis Morales and Eduardo Jungairiño and the casting took place at the Nervión Shipyard in the Basque Country.

After its inauguration, it became a fundamental access point from the capital of Palencia (around Paseo del Salón and Plaza Pío XII) to Isla Dos Aguas, the Río Carrión Hospital and the Villamuriel de Cerrato highway.
