La maison Chapais:
Cette somptueuse demeure est construite en 1833 pour le marchand Jean-Charles Chapais père (1811-1885), l’un des Pères de la Confédération, puis habitée par son fils, sir Thomas Chapais (1858-1946), historien, journaliste et homme d’État. Son toit en larmier légèrement retroussé, ses grands balcons ceinturant le premier étage, ses terrasses dotées d’escaliers tournants et ses portiques sobres en font un exemple remarquable de l’architecture domestique canadienne-française du milieu du XIXe siècle. Fort bien conservée, elle comporte des éléments intérieurs d’exception, notamment des boiseries et des menuiseries raffinées.
The Chapais House:
This magnificent house was built in 1833 for the merchant Jean-Charles Chapais Sr. (1811–1885), a Father of Confederation, and served as the long-time residence of his son, Sir Thomas Chapais (1858–1946), a historian, journalist, and statesman. The slightly curved bellcast roof, large balconies surrounding the first floor, winding staircases leading to the terraces, and simply sculptured porticos make Chapais House a remarkable example of French-Canadian domestic architecture in the mid-19th century. This well-preserved residence also features exceptional interior detailing, including fine woodwork and joinery.
