At 120 ft., High Falls on the Pigeon River is listed as Minnesota’s highest waterfall. Because it lies on an international border, there are two discrete ways to view the falls. On the American side, it’s via a half-mile paved trail in Grand Portage State Park. On the Canadian side, it’s a longer, slightly more difficult trail located in Ontario’s Pigeon River Provincial Park. On the U.S. side, the trail leads to three separate viewing areas which are reached via wooden stairs and/or boardwalks, one of which is wheelchair accessible.

This area is known as Grand Portage because eighteenth-century French fur trappers and Voyageurs as well as American Indians had to carry their canoes about nine miles between Lake Superior and the lakes to the north in order to avoid the rapids and falls along the Pigeon River including the formidable High Falls.

The coordinates provided are for the main viewing area on the U.S. side.
