Lawns Dike flows into Bushcliffe Beck at the southern end of the lake within the park.

Newmillerdam Country Park has a number of footpaths and tracks with surrounding broadleaved and coniferous woodland located on the slopes.

The country park was once part of an estate which was owned by the Pilkington family. In the 1870's the family built nine lodges to house the gamekeepers who protected the site from poachers. Two lodges can still be seen today guarding the Dam.

The estate was sold to Wakefield Council in 1954 and opened to the public.

The paths were originally built for the estate and the gamekeepers but now provide good footpaths to explore the park. The track over the bridge is also wide enough to carry vehicles of the volunteers that maintain the park today.
