In Chapter 29 of "Double" a mystery by Bill Pronzoni and Marcia Muller, Private Investigator Sharon McCone follows a suspicious character as he enters the Zoo after hours through an unsecured employee entrance. After observing the suspicious character, McCone becomes aware of a security guard and moves to escape his flashlight. She manages to get lost in the process. She eventually uses the moonlight to find her way out...and the suspect's convertible car is still in the parking lot...and her inspection of the car reveals a significant clue.
