200 years ago, Napoleonic troops abandoned the Plaza Forte de Santoña, known as the Gibraltar of the North, which had garrisoned it since 1810. Then, the Governor-General Count of Lameth handed over the town and its imposing fortifications to the Spanish authorities, since he refused to hand it over to the British envoys. It was the surrender of the French army and the end of their occupation.
