Two imposing white columns, robust like those of Hercules, adorned with the coat of arms of the Catholic Monarchs, hold up this beautiful sculpture in homage to Juan de la Cosa from Santoñe. The hole they form comes to symbolize the door to the end of the world, since at the time of making the trip, success was not taken for granted. The Cantabrian cartographer has his bust at the foot of the statue. He had the honor of accompanying Columbus to the new world, piloting one of his illustrious caravels, the Santa María. The ship is represented in the highest part of the monument, located on the Paseo Marítimo, in what is a nod to this universal sailor.
