Pro tip: if you are driving along and see a modern double circular dipole FM broadcast array on a tower in the middle of nowhere USA, it's an iHeart Media radio station, 100% -- or in this case, TWO stations: KNGC-FM & KXGL-FM.

KGNC is one of the oldest radio stations in Amarillo, and the first to broadcast in FM stereo - albeit experimentally, with sister station KGNC-AM.

From Wikipedia: (visit link)

"KGNC-FM (97.9 MHz) is a radio broadcast station in Amarillo, Texas, United States. It is the oldest FM station in the Amarillo region. KGNC-FM airs a country music format. The station is owned by Alpha Media LLC. Studios for it and its partners are located in southwest Amarillo near the former Western Plaza shopping center.

History

The current KGNC-FM is the second station to hold that call sign. The first KGNC-FM, also located in Amarillo, debuted on November 25, 1947, at 104.3 MHz, as the first FM station broadcasting in the Texas panhandle. Licensed to the Plains Broadcasting Company, this station ceased operations in 1950.

On October 1, 1958, an application by Plains Broadcasting for a new FM station was granted, for operation with a power of 14.6 kilowatts and an HAAT (Height Above Average Terrain) of 441 feet (134 meters), transmitting on 93.1 MHz. The new station was assigned the call letters KGNC-FM.

KGNC-FM began broadcasting on December 24, 1958, initially simulcasting its AM sister station, KGNC.

Its first day of broadcasting included an early example of stereo transmission, with the sending of a demonstration phonograph record's right-channel audio over KGNC-FM, and the left-channel audio over KGNC.

In 1960, the station began broadcasting programming that was separate from KGNC's

On February 15, 1972, an application was granted to move to 97.9 MHz, with a maximum power of 45.5 kilowatts, and a HAAT of 1,285 feet (392 m)."

And a little history from Wikipedia: (visit link)

KXGL (100.9 FM) is a commercial radio station located in Amarillo, Texas. KXGL airs a classic hits music format branded as "The Eagle". Under ownership of Alpha Media, studios are located in southwest Amarillo (in the same building as sister stations KGNC-AM-FM), and its transmitter is north of the city in unincorporated Potter County.

History

Prior to its existence as a classic hits station, KXGL was a Spanish language format station called, "La Picosita" with the call sign KPQZ. The station was purchased by Feuer/McCord Communications Inc. for US$3 million in 2002.[2] Feuer/McCord Communications became JMJ Broadcasting in 2005. KXGL was sold to Alpha Media in September 2015.

On a Sunday night in October 2002, Amarillo got a brand new radio station with a unique sound beginning its broadcast with "20,000 Songs In A Row".

By mandate, there would be fewer commercials. There would be several times a day where there would be no commercials. "Eagle Commercial Free Flights" would span 100 minutes with Classic Hits."
