The iconic image of the United Nations Building in New York has the General Assembly Building in the foreground with the Secretariat Building looming over it in the background.
The groundbreaking design for this building was produced by a board of design headed by Wallace K. Harrison with overall composition being the responsibility of Le Corbusier. It was constructed in the Turtle Bay section of Manhattan along the East River from 42nd to 48th streets between 1947 and 1953. The building has 38 storys and is 544 feet tall. The architectural design is called International Style II. It was New York City's first glass curtain wall building.
The coin was minted by the People's Republic of China in 1995 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the United Nations.
