At this point the River Calder is partly canalised with artificial cuts that were built to bypass weirs and to straighten the route taken by boats. The Calder and Hebble Navigation is just to the south of this point on the river.

Hartley Bank Colliery was on the south side of the Calder and Hebble Navigation and had wharves there to load coal onto boats, but as production increased the single track railway was lengthened to cross bridges on both the Calder and Hebble Navigation and at this point the river Calder. The coal that crossed the river was then loaded onto nearby trains at Horbury Junction.

The coal mine closed in 1968 and at a later date the bridges were converted to be used as a public footpath.

This bridge was of a girder construction with a small stone single arch at the north end to allow pedestrians access alongside the river bank.
