Belize is a Caribbean country located on the northeastern coast of Central America. Its capital is Belmopan, and its largest city is the namesake city of Belize City.

In an effort to transcend and heal from its long colonial history, the nation of Belize, after gaining full independence from Great Britain in 1981, decided to transform the enormous prison in downtown Belize City into a museum.

Today, however, the building now proudly houses exhibits on Belize’s long history, including the contributions made by the Maya (both ancient and modern), the Garifuna, the Creole, and other peoples of color.

Visitors can see a rich assembly of Mayan ceremonial objects, carvings, paintings, and other cultural artifacts. The Museum also operates a number of special exhibits, including displays on the insects, flora, and fauna indigenous to the country.

This timeline including piracy in Belize begins in 200-800 AD when Mayan cities flourished across Belize and ends in 1786 when the British received the colony of Belize.
