Bourke's Luck Potholes - Mpumalanga, South Africa - Wikipedia Entries on Waymarking.com

The Bourke's Luck Potholes are a rock formation on the Panorama Route in Mpumalanga Province in eastern South Africa, near Graskop on the R532.

At the confluence of the Treur River and the Blyde Rive, the erosion of the flowing water in the red sandstone has created a canyon that merges into the Blyde River Canyon. Further erosion, particularly the movement of rocks in whirlpools, has carved deep whirlpool holes and cauldrons into the bedrock.

The attraction is named for prospector Tom Bourke, who found a small amount of gold on the site (although the associated gold vein was off his claim). But he correctly predicted that large gold deposits would be found in the area.

The visitors' information center details some of the interesting natural and socio-historical features and constitutes the starting point for the 700 m promenade to the potholes.
