This fine courthouse was constructed in 1888. The central clock tower and elaborate mansard roof were destroyed by fire on New Year's Eve, December 31, 1929, and were replaced by a flat roof. In 1965 the courthouse was modernized; the remains of the old roof were replaced so that the courthouse appeared to be a rather plain Art Deco building with no frieze art. A 2006 grant allowed the courthouse to be restored to its original Second Empire design, restoring the clock tower, roofline, and this elaborate frieze art.
