The passing through Rockhampton by the 1956 Olympic Flame is recorded out the front of the Rockhampton Council building. A square brass plaque is embedded in a faced rectangular sandstone stele that is positioned on two additional sandstone blocks on a concrete pad in the landscaped gardens at the drive-through at the front of the Council Chambers. The cast inscription reads:
Games of the XVI Olympiad Melbourne
22nd November - 8th December 1956
On the steps of City Hall on 13th.
November 1956, Ald. R. Pilbeam accepted
the Olympic Flame from K. Doyle and
lit the City Cauldron, followed by a
short reception, relit the Olympic Torch
and handed it to G. Pearce to continue
its journey south to Melbourne.
