In order to enter the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial you must first pass through a massive two part split granite gateway before reaching the larger than life relief sculpture of Martin Luther King, Jr. There is a reason for this unusual design.

The two parts of the monument refer the the sentence in the I Have a Dream speech that Martin Luther King Jr. gave at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. on August 28, 1963. The full sentence from the speech is:

“With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope.”

Thus the gateway is the Mountain of Despair and the sculpture is the Stone of Hope.
