The electric stove was first produced around 1912 by inventor (and grandfather of singer Linda Ronstadt) Lloyd Copeman who called it the ‘fireless cooker.’ It is said that while Copeman was representing his company at a trade show in Philadelphia, the president of Westinghouse approached him and asked how he was doing. Copeman said that he had a good product but a lousy sales organization, to which the president of Westinghouse responded that they had a great sales organization but no cooking product. Within days, Westinghouse had acquired the Copeman Electric Stove Company and thus broke into the household appliance business.
First introduced in 1917, the Westinghouse Automatic Electric Range featured automatic thermostats and timers, along with removable heating elements and an automatic on-off feature allowing food to be cooked with no one present. It came in both a single and double version, which was basically two singles side by side. The fully automatic 3-19B double had a 1917 list price of $375.
Ca’ d’Zan, in Sarasota, Florida, was the winter home of circus mogul John Ringling and his wife Mable. Built in the 1920s, Ringling spared no expense in equipping this home as can be seen in the kitchen which featured this fully automatic Westinghouse 3-19B double electric range. The house and grounds (and circus museum and world-class art museum) are open year-round for tours. The stove looks to be in great shape although it’s missing one of its clocks.
