This large and modern library is located on the first floor of the building, within the Hackney Technology and Learning Centre. The building is also home to the Hackney Museum as well as the offices of various educational services. It functions as a lending library with a large collection of books, CDs and DVDs. It has a sizeable study area and has 20-plus computer terminals available for public use. There is a very small exhibition space and various events are held daily, usually aimed at children. There is full disabled access.
The first Hackney Central Library opened in 1908, on the east side of Mare Street. It closed during the 1990s and has now been converted to use as a cinema and music venue (the Hackney Picturehouse). The current library premises opened across the road in 1999. The new library building came with an appropriate address - 1 Reading Lane.
Hackney Central Library is the main library of eight in total in the London Borough of Hackney. As with all public libraries in the UK, the continuing existence of libraries in Hackney is at risk with closures possible due to central Government cuts to funding.
Until recently, this library was home to a large collection of books on the history and development of London. This collection has now relocated to the Hackney Archives in Dalston.
