This locomotive was restored for display in the 1970s and has been a symbol of the past hydro-electric operations prior to motor-vehicle travel. At one time rail was the only route to take. Today, most rail only routes no longer exist.

Plaque Text:
Purchased In 1927 For $7,500.00, "NO. 6” carried supplies and equipment to build the dams and powerhouses. She brought personnel and tourists to the Skagit until 1954. She played a major role in helping fulfill the dream of J.D. Ross to build a hydro-electric project to supply the City of Seattle with low cost electricity. In the 1970's, the Skagit River Railway volunteers restored the train to operating condition.

Marker Text:
Engine Number 6 was part of the Skagit River Railway, a 31-mile line built by Seattle City Light from Rockport to the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project beginning in 1919. This photo shows the network of tracks which passed though Newhalem in 1935. For years, the railroad was the only means of transporting materials, equipment, workers, and tourist for the Project. After the area became more accessible to vehicles, the railroad was dismantled in 1954.
