This locomotive was originally built for the Savannah & Western Railroad in 1891 as their #557. It became part of the newly reorganized Central of Georgia Railroad when it absorbed the financially troubled S & W in 1895. After a couple of renumberings, it became #349. Still in operation in the early 1950s, old #349 was one of the last remaining “American” style 4-4-0 steam locomotives in revenue service.

As one might guess, the Central of Georgia RR (not to be confused with the Georgia Central RR) operated in central Georgia (and eastern Alabama). It reached as far as Birmingham and Montgomery in Alabama and Chattanooga in Tennessee, connecting them with the cities of Atlanta, Macon and Savannah, among others, in Georgia. The Central of Georgia became part of the Class 1 Southern Railway in 1963, and subsequently, part of the Norfolk Southern Railway in 1982.

In 1987, engine #349 was donated to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum where it was displayed for a while before being loaned to the Erlanger Children’s Hospital for permanent display. I’m not sure what therapeutic value the hospital expects to get from #349, but it certainly would have made me feel better as a child (maybe even as an adult).
