SUSTRANS Millennium Milestone - Methley, UK - Milestones on Waymarking.com

This milestone is on The Trans Pennine Trail, a long-distance path running from coast to coast across Northern England entirely on surfaced paths and using only gentle gradients (it runs largely along disused railway lines and canal towpaths). There is also a north-south section from Chesterfield to Leeds via Wakefield, and this milestone is on the north-south section and is on the west side of the nearby M62 Motorway.

This section of the Trans Pennine Trail also shares the route of National Cycle Route 67 which links Loughborough and Northallerton.

At this point the route follows the former Methley Joint Railway, a short section of railway that formed one side of a triangle connecting Methley to Lofthouse.

SUSTRANS is an organisation that promotes the use of cycles as a green form of transport. A national network of cycle routes is being developed in conjunction with local councils. Wherever possible the routes avoid roads, but in some places have to share the road network.

As part of the millennium celebrations 1000 mileposts have been installed at various positions throughout the whole SUSTRANS network.

Sustrans commissioned four artists from the four countries of the United Kingdom to design cast iron ‘Millennium Mileposts’, but each design was spread throughout the network rather than being only installed in the country of birth of the artist.

This English Style milepost was designed by Brighton based Jon Mills, entitled “The Fossil Tree”. The post takes the form of an abstract tree with relief imagery of fossils depicting the passage of time from early primitive creatures to the ultimate demise of fossil fuel driven technology.

SUSTRANS encouraged local communities to paint the milestones in a colour scheme of their choosing. In this case the milestone has been painted in a number of colours.

All of this type of milestone is embossed with the logo of the Millennium Commission, but in this case it also stands on a small stone plinth with an attached Millennium Commission plaque.
