It is the oldest of the halls of residence that has been open since its foundation, on November 20, 1649. One of the most prestigious halls of residence in the history of Spain, which still receives students from all over the world to study at university.

The origins of the school go back to two historical figures, both twenty-four-year-old gentlemen and renowned and important people from the city of Granada: Don Diego de Ribera and Don Bartolomé Veneroso.

On December 20, 1774, after the expulsion of the Jesuits from Spain, King Carlos III took the Colegio Mayor under his protection, granting it the title of Royal. This meant that the College was managed directly by the Spanish Government. The College would later change its patron several times, passing from the Government to the Provincial Council of Granada, to the Chancery or to the University of Granada.

At present, the Real Colegio Mayor San Bartolomé y Santiago functions as a university residence for the University of Granada. Beyond its emblematic building (one of the oldest of the university itself) it stands out for its cultural life, in the school all kinds of cultural and academic events are held, in most cases free admission for all those interested .
