The Tour de France is an annual men's multiple-stage bicycle race primarily held in France, while also occasionally passing through nearby countries.
In 2014 the early stages of the race were held in Yorkshire causing great excitement. The first day's stage (1905.5 km long), known as the Grand Depart, started in the city centre of Leeds and passed through the town of Otley.
A number of art works, murals and decorative bikes were erected at the time, and this carving is one that has remained in the town.
The carving shows three cyclists racing close together.
During long cycling races such as this large groups of cyclists sometimes bunch together and this group is known as a peloton. The carving represents such a peloton.
It is situated outside the Woolpack Music and Arts Studio, a community music studio and rehearsal space.
This sculpture forms part of the 'ART IN OTLEY' art trail and is number 2 as mentioned on a plaque next to the sculpture.

This peloton of stone cyclists
was carved to celebrate Le
Grand Depart of Le Tour de

a stone cyclist in a dry stone
wall on the Ilkley road that
celebrates the same event.
