Eerlijk zijn: wie heeft zich nooit afgevraagd waar de naam van de Hellestraat vandaan komt? Je kunt denken aan duivels en demonen, maar is dat terecht? Wij zochten het voor je uit.

Eén ding is zeker: de twee aangrenzende straten gaan ons niet helpen om dit mysterie op te lossen. De website van Archief Eemland daarentegen helpt wél. “De naam hangt ongetwijfeld samen met het het feit dat de straat een lichte helling vertoont”, lezen we op de website van het archief. Interessant, maar klopt dat?

Ton Blom gaf in het Algemeen Dagblad de volgende verklaring: “De straat was vernoemd naar het omstreeks 1600 gedempte Hellegrachtje.” En inderdaad: De Hellegracht werd aangelegd aan het eind van de 13e, begin 14e eeuw en hij liep min of meer parallel aan de Westsingel, in de buurt van de Hellestraat dus. Goed: er was een gracht, maar is dat dan dé verklaring voor de naam van de straat? Niet helemaal, er speelt namelijk nog iets mee. De Hellestraat heeft niet altijd zo geheten, van 1895 tot 1905 had de straat een andere naam.

Blom: “Vroeger werd de straat ook Hellingstraat genoemd, omdat de naam Hellestraat, met het oog op het nabije kerkhof, ongepast werd geacht. Met het woordje hel werd echter laagte bedoeld.” En dan komen we weer op de verklaring van het archief: de helling in de straat. Eén ding is zeker, met de hel heeft deze straat vrij weinig te maken.

To be honest: who has never wondered where the name of the Hellestraat comes from? You can think of devils and demons, but is that right? We looked into it for you.

One thing is certain: the two adjacent streets are not going to help us solve this mystery. The Eemland Archive website, on the other hand, does help. “The name is undoubtedly related to the fact that the street has a slight slope,” we read on the archive's website. Interesting, but is that correct?

Ton Blom gave the following statement in Algemeen Dagblad: “The street was named after the Hellegracht, which was filled in around 1600.” And indeed: The Hellegracht was built at the end of the 13th, early 14th century and it ran more or less parallel to the Westsingel, in the vicinity of the Hellestraat. Good: there was a canal, but is that the explanation for the name of the street? Not quite, because there is something else involved. The Hellestraat has not always been called that, from 1895 to 1905 the street had a different name.

Blom: “The street used to be called Hellingstraat, because the name Hellestraat was considered inappropriate in view of the nearby cemetery. The word hell, however, meant low.” And then we come back to the statement of the archive: the ramp in the street. One thing is certain, this street has very little to do with hell.
