The plaque says, "First Methodist college in the world. Planned at Christmas conference. Named for Bishops Thomas Coke and Francis Asbury, corner stone laid on this site June 5, 1785 by Asbury. Classes begun 1787. Burned December 4, 1795. Monument dedicated 1968."
