Tijdens het bezoek aan het ‘stadion’ van de Amsterdam Crusaders, zag ik in gigantische letters “Crusaders” op het veld. Aan de andere kant staat “Amsterdam”, maar daar heb ik geen foto van geschoten. Op google earth springt het er mooi uit…

De Amsterdam Crusaders is een American-footballclub uit Amsterdam. Het clubhuis staat op sportpark Sloten, alwaar ook de thuiswedstrijden worden gespeeld. De competitiewedstrijden worden onder de vlag van de American Football Bond Nederland gespeeld.

De Crusaders zijn opgericht in 1984 en zijn, samen met de Rotterdam Trojans en de Alphen Eagles, het oudste nog actieve team in Nederland. Het team werd opgericht toen spelers van de Amsterdam Rams besloten dat het tijd was voor een tweede team in Amsterdam.

De Amsterdam Crusaders is het meest succesvolle American-footballteam van Nederland. In hun bestaan veroverden zij 16 keer de Tulip Bowl en werden daarmee evenzoveel keer Nederlands kampioen. Daarnaast heeft het team twee keer de Eurobowl gewonnen.

Opmerkelijk is dat de Crusaders het enige Nederlandse team is dat een NFL-speler heeft voortgebracht. Romeo Bandison speelde na zijn tijd bij de Amsterdammers voor de Cleveland Browns en de Washington Redskins.

The Amsterdam Crusaders is an American football club from Amsterdam. The clubhouse is located at the Sloten sports park, where the home games are also played. The competition matches are played under the flag of the American Football Bond Netherlands.

The Crusaders were founded in 1984 and are, together with the Rotterdam Trojans and the Alphen Eagles, the oldest still active team in the Netherlands. The team was founded when players of the Amsterdam Rams decided it was time for a second team in Amsterdam.

The Amsterdam Crusaders is the most successful American football team in the Netherlands. In their existence they conquered the Tulip Bowl 16 times and became Dutch champions as many times. In addition, the team has won the Eurobowl twice.

Remarkably, the Crusaders are the only Dutch team to have produced an NFL player. Romeo Bandison played for the Cleveland Browns and Washington Redskins after his time with the team from Amsterdam.
