Saint Joseph Catholic Church on Hope Street in Providence, Rhode Island, is the oldest Roman Catholic church built of stone in the state. Designed by architect Patrick Keely (1816-1896), it was constructed from 1851 to 1853 and is still in use.

"It is a large rectangular structure with a steeply pitched gable roof, and a square tower protruding from the front facade. It is faced in ashlar stone with brownstone trim. The sides are supported in part by buttresses." (Source: Wikipedia)

From the congregation's website:

THE BUILDING: "On January 24, 1851, Bishop Bernard O'Reilly established Saint Joseph as the third parish in the City of Providence. The present church building was erected in 1853 and has served as our place of worship ever since. The building was designed by the renowned 19th-century architect Patrick C. Keely, whose resume boasts nearly 600 churches in the Eastern United States and Canada. Saint Joseph Church is one of the most breathtaking examples of English Gothic architecture in the state, and enjoys the distinction of being the oldest operating Catholic church building in the historic City of Providence."

THE STAINED GLASS: "Saint Joseph Church boasts some of the most breathtaking stained glass windows in all of New England...When the church building was originally completed, the parish was not able to afford stained-glass windows and operated without them for nearly 50 years. The windows you see now were installed over a five-year period — from 1900 to 1905 — with the exception of Window 20 in the choir loft, which was installed in 1924. They were designed and fabricated by the eminent liturgical artist Franz Meyer, who managed studios in both Munich and New York City."

The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Additional information about the church can be found in this on-line brochure and descriptions of the stained-glass windows in this brochure.
