The river Hull is a river that rises to the west of Driffield and flows south to Hull and onto to join the river Humber. It is navigable from Struncheon Hill Lock to the river Humber and from this lock it is tidal.

There are a number of bridges that cross the river, most of which are moveable, though further south from here the river gets wider and the bridges larger. This is the northernmost moveable bridge on the river.

On the north side of the bridge is a shipyard which started in 1763 repairing wooden ships. Over the time the shipyard expanded building trawlers and in both WWI and WWII ships for the war effort.

The period after WWII also saw further expansion building trawlers for the fishing fleet in Hull. However both the decline in the Hull fishing fleet and demand for larger vessels led to a decline in the shipyard until it largely closed down. Today it has just a small independent ship builder.

For most of the period when the shipyard was in operation there was a ferry bridge at this point until it was replaced by this truss lift bridge in 1953.

There is a control room next to the bridge to operate it when it needs to be opened. These days there is little boat traffic this far north on the river and the control room is not manned. A sign on the side states that if it is required to have the bridge opened there is a minimum notice period to request this. Monday to Friday 48 hours notice is required, for Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays 72 hours notice is required.

Other signs on the bridge indicate there is a weight limit of 3 Tonnes maximum gross weight and a height limit of 3.3 metres.
