Early Italian Renaissance master Giotto di Bondone, usually referred to simply as Giotto, was both an artist and an architect who lived in Florence during the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. Although not a whole lot is known for certain about the life and works of Giotto, he is generally regarded as the first painter to break from the more 2-dimensional style of the Byzantine period to the more natural look of the Renaissance.

This work dates from between 1310 to 1315 and was originally part of a polyptych altarpiece consisting of five sections, this being the central one. It is one of the earliest works of art to have appeared on a U.S. Christmas stamp. The tempera on wood panel hangs in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.
