The Okmulgee Northern Railway, chartered in 1915, was a short line operating over about ten miles of track in Okmulgee County, Oklahoma. Primarily a coal hauler, the operation lasted until 1964 when the line was abandoned, and its assets sold to the Frisco.
Built in 1923 by ALCO’s Cooke Works in Paterson, NJ, this locomotive was originally destined for Cuba but, when that deal fell through, it was placed in storage until the Okmulgee Northern bought it in 1933 and gave it number 5. Nicknamed ‘Tommy,’ the locomotive remained in service until 1958 and complemented ON’s other two locomotives: ‘Charlie,’ another 2-8-0 consolidation and ‘Sam,’ an ALCO-built 4-6-0.
