American realist painter Edward Hopper often spent his summers on Cape Cod where he found ample inspiration for his artwork. This painting shows a sailboat beating against the wind with the Long Point Lighthouse in the background. Since you cannot sail directly into the wind, sailboats follow a zig-zag pattern with the individual segments called ‘legs.’ Sometimes the zigs are longer than the zags, producing ‘long legs’ and ‘short legs,’ hence the name of the painting.

Long Point Lighthouse is one of three lighthouses in Provincetown, at the very tip of Cape Cod. The view is to the southeast from the marina area. Although the lighthouse still stands, the adjacent buildings have been removed and the sand dunes have shifted around a bit.

The mostly blue painting belongs to the Huntington in San Marino, California (about as far away from Cape Cod as you can get and still be in the continental United States). The Huntington is the former estate of railroad magnate Henry E. Huntington and consists of several art museums, a research library and Mr. Huntington’s grave all on 130 acres of meticulously landscaped gardens. The gardens and museums are open to the general public.
