[ES] La catedral que hoy se contempla está levantada sobre otra de estilo románico, de gran belleza y riquísima decoración a juzgar por los elementos que han llegado hasta nosotros. En el último tercio del siglo XV comenzó a ser demolida por su cabecera para dar paso a la catedral actual, que guarda un gran parecido con las catedrales del gótico alemán.
La sorprendente fachada corresponde a las últimas etapas constructivas de la catedral, comienzos del siglo XVIII. Es un espectacular retablo de piedra, obra maestra del barroco leonés. La integran tres portadas y un hastial, primorosamente tallado como obra de orfebrería y flanqueado por dos torres gemelas de planta cuadrada, unidas por graciosos arbotantes y puentecillos al cuerpo central y coronadas por chapiteles.
El programa iconográfico desarrolla una impresionante predicación. Cinco escenas evangélicas salen al paso en mediorrelieves elocuentes. A la izquierda, Cristo con el azote expulsa a los mercaderes del templo. A la derecha, Jesús escribiendo con el dedo en la tierra, cuando una mujer sorprendida en adulterio es llevada para que la condene. En la parte superior derecha de la concha, la escena de la curación del hidrópico. En la parte superior izquierda, se representa la escena del ciego de Betsaida, vestido de peregrino. Presidiendo en todo lo alto, el descendimiento de Cristo y el Padre Eterno.
El espacio interior de la catedral impresiona por su sorprendente elevación y su luminosidad.
Su planta es rectangular, de siete tramos, con tres capillas absidiales y tres naves de extraordinaria altura, dos semejantes y la central más alta. En ella confluyen gran variedad armónica de estilos y lenguajes artísticos de cada época, siempre con el predominio de su gótico-tardío.
Esta catedral gótica es la única en España de abolengo alemán. Muestra de ello son las bóvedas correspondientes a las capillas absidiales y a los dos primeros tramos. En las bellas crucerías estrelladas convive el racionalismo gótico con la sofisticada y lujosa estética del tiempo de los Reyes Católicos.
En las estrellas del último tramo, en torno a la rosa de la clave dorada, con vivos y graciosos colores se asoman rostros de papas, obispos, monjes… pero será la heráldica del cordero del Apocalipsis el símbolo más representado y repetido de la catedral, ya que hace alusión al escudo del Cabildo Catedral de Astorga.

[EN] The cathedral that can be seen today is built on top of another in the Romanesque style, of great beauty and rich decoration, judging by the elements that have come down to us. In the last third of the 15th century, its apse began to be demolished to make way for the current cathedral, which bears a great resemblance to German Gothic cathedrals.
The surprising facade corresponds to the last construction stages of the cathedral, beginning of the 18th century. It is a spectacular stone altarpiece, a masterpiece of the León baroque. It is made up of three portals and a gable end, beautifully carved as a goldsmith's work and flanked by two square twin towers, joined by graceful flying buttresses and small bridges to the central body and crowned by spires.
The iconographic program develops an impressive preaching. Five evangelical scenes stand out in eloquent half-reliefs. On the left, Christ with the whip expels the merchants from the temple. On the right, Jesus writing with his finger on the ground, when a woman caught in adultery is brought to be sentenced. In the upper right part of the shell, the scene of the healing of the dropsy. In the upper left part, the scene of the blind man from Betsaida, dressed as a pilgrim, is represented. Presiding over all above, the descent of Christ and the Eternal Father.
The interior space of the cathedral impresses with its surprising elevation and its luminosity.
Its floor plan is rectangular, with seven sections, with three apse chapels and three naves of extraordinary height, two similar and the central one higher. In it, a great harmonic variety of artistic styles and languages of each era converge, always with the predominance of its late-Gothic.
This Gothic cathedral is the only one in Spain of German ancestry. Proof of this are the vaults corresponding to the apse chapels and the first two sections. In the beautiful star-shaped ribs, Gothic rationalism coexists with the sophisticated and luxurious aesthetics of the time of the Catholic Monarchs.
In the stars of the last section, around the rose of the golden key, with bright and graceful colors, the faces of popes, bishops, monks appear... but the heraldry of the lamb of the Apocalypse will be the most represented and repeated symbol of the cathedral, since it alludes to the coat of arms of the Cabildo Catedral de Astorga.
