The bridge carries the road at an angle across the tracks and traffic can get congested at times.

The bridge was constructed by a famous Derby company that had constructed many bridges for railway comapnies all over the world. Originally started by Andrew Handyside he took over the Brittania Foundry in 1848.

Handyside died in 1887 and the firm, now known simply as Handyside gradually declined until it closed early in the twentieth century. This is probably one of the last bridges the company made.

The ownership of the railways in the UK have changed many times but currently this bridge, refernece number ECM4/4 is owned by Network Rail (CE Struct) and carries traffic over the London North Eastern Route. link

It is known by them as the Ecm4/4 Holgate Road Overline Bridge.
