Medieval murals in St Lawrence's church, Eyam.
"The wall paintings which are beneath the windows above the arcade are known to have been executed in at least two stages from the late 16th century into the 17th century, until they disappeared, concealed from public view, following the onset of the interregnum of 1649 (where they will also have remained concealed to Mompesson’s view during the
Plague in the Restoration period).
There are wall paintings on the nave walls which are the most outstanding artistic feature in the church and are of high significance. The work was undertaken at the end of the 16th century through to the early years of the 17th in three distinct phases. They were however all covered in the period of the Commonwealth when so much damage was done to works of art in churches, and they did not see the light of day for over 200 years. What is seen now is largely what was left of the second scheme, which was painted c1600. The paintings are all of great interest and quality and were conserved in 1963 by Ms Eve Baker but they are currently deteriorating. It was agreed that the work that remained should be strengthened, but nothing should be added, which explains why the quotations below the cartouches are incomplete.
[The] murals that survive of the original twelve tribes of Israel from the late 16th century."
