This bridge carrying the Dalton Highway over the Yukon River is made of planks, which are more durable than asphalt or concrete in this extreme Arctic environment. This part of Alaska is so remote, that there are no powerlines, and so structures that can host a solar array depend on solar power.
Small solar panel at the south end of the E. L. Patton bridge over the Yukon River features a small solar panel which powers the lights that ensure that this bridge can be safely used 24 hours a day.
Because the sun in the arctic never rises much over 44* over the horizon, most solar panels are mounted perpendicular to the ground to capture as much light as possible.
